This is my personal review without spoilers of the actual plot.
A young woman with a secret heritage. A man who made a deal with the devil. And an academy where the students are just as dangerous as the demons …
I’ve been kept from the truth all my life. Demons walk the earth, and I’m destined to slay them—I only wish I hadn’t lost someone I loved while discovering that truth.
Now the demons are after me. The only way to stay alive is to attend an academy for demon hunters—a school where I’ll learn how to kill supernaturals and slay the underworld’s minions. But I still feel there are secrets I’m not being told …
I sold my soul to save my family—and lost everything because of it. Now I’m a slave to the underworld, a hunter with half-demon blood.
I’ve been sent on a special assassination mission. If I fail, it means my life. But protecting Erin soon becomes more important than any other task, and there’s something about her that tells me her arrival at the academy will change everything …
Truthfully, this book caught my eye due to the cover, it is such a beautiful front and back cover!
This was my first introduction to the author, and I’m thrilled to have had this experience!
The strength of this book lies in the awesome would building that was created. It brings out the best in the characters, whom are all very different, and the plot, which is very interesting and unique. The story is told from our two main characters, Erin and Rey, point of view which gave us an insight to their innermost thoughts, which then lead us to get acquainted with them on a more personal level, making us readers aware of their internal development. They have strikingly different upbringings but somehow share lots of similarities.
Our secondary characters were as expected to be honest. Nothing groundbreaking there. If you’re read House of Night series by P. C. Cast, you’ll know the characters even before you get to know them, as they are very similar. Like any other series, this book makes ton of room for more books in the series, where we get to know both the main as well as the secondary characters and honest to God, I can’t wait to sink my teeth into the second book.
The writing in this book is very fast paced and the language fluid, I’m not good at reading English books, because they end up boring, but this book was captivating from start to finish, never a dull moment and as the story progressed and build more tension, we had some groundbreaking revelations!
All in all, very well executed, entertaining and encouraging start to this hopefully awesome series. Definitely recommendable to fans of the fantasy genre, more specifically The Mortal Instruments, The Vampire Academy and Harry Potter.
To be honest with you, this deserves more than 5 stars!
